Liberty Mutual Auto and Home Insurance

Members will benefit form NTEU's partnership with Liberty Mutual - one of the nation's largest insurer's - to offer a program called Group Savings Plus.
Some of the great benefits offered by Group Savings Plus are:

  • A money-saving group discount on auto and homeowners policies;
  • Convenient payment plan - checking account deduction or direct billing:
  • No down payment when checking account deduction option is selected;
  • No finance charges or service fees;
  • 24-hour claims service;
  • 24-emergency roadside assistance for auto customers; and
  • Personalized service from local representatives.

Group discounts coupled with other premium reductions such as multi-car, multi-policy, safe driver, passive restraints, and anti-theft device discounts could result in substantial savings for you and your family.  NTEU members will also receive the greatest discount allowable by law in each state.  This discount ranges from 5 percent to 10 percent.

Colonial Short-term Disability, Universal Life and Cancer Insurance

NTEU is constantly striving to improve your benefits by offering coverage that meet the needs of you and your family, and Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company is just the company to do that.

Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company was founded in 1939, and has superior industry ratings, with high quality assets/investment portfolios and long-term profitable growth.  In partnership with Colonial, NTEU offers the following insurance options:

  • Accident & Sickness Disability Coverage (short term);
  • Cancer Coverage; and
  • Individual Life Insurance

These insurance options are:

  • Available to NTEU "members only;"
  • Payable through payroll deductions;
  • For member, spouse, and children;
  • Portable, affordable, and
  • Guaranteed renewable.

Contact your local chapter officer or steward for information on how to schedule a meeting with a Colonial representative at the workplace to discuss your individual insurance needs.*

*Per the NORD/NC V collective bargaining agreement, all bargaining unit employees are entitled to one hour of official time annually to meet with a Colonial representative at the workplace.



CIGNA Dental Care

NTEU offers a high-quality dental plan through CIGNA Dental Care.  This dental plan, which offers two options, can be used alone or used as a supplemental coverage to your current Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) plan.

Under this managed care program, you may visit any dentist listed in the Dental Office Directory.  There are no deductibles or claim forms, so you are covered starting with your first visit.



FlexCare Accidental Death & Dismemberment Protection

You cannot always protect yourself from accidents.  But with FlexCare Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance, you can protect yourself from some of the costs.

Accidents are unpredictable.  Although we are careful, they still can (and do) occur.  If one were to happen to you or your family, would you be able to pay the bills?  FlexCare Accident Insurance offers this three-way protection:

  • Accidental death benefit that is payable regardless of other insurance coverage
  • Dismemberment benefits that cover certain losses due to an accident
  • Disability benefits for covered persons who are unable to work when an accident results in total and permanent disability

Benefits:  Select $10,000 to $100,000 in benefits



FlexCare Group Term Life Insurance

Because nobody knows what tomorrow may bring, it's a good idea to protect your income with term life insurance coverage.  NTEU FlexCare Group Term Life offers you this protection at economical group rates for members.  Here is what the plan offers you:

Benefits:  Member coverage available from $10,000 to $200,000.  Spouse and children are eligible, too.

Eligibility: Must be actively employed when enrolled.

Premium:  Premiums are payable quarterly or annually and are based on member's age.  All eligible children may be covered at a cost of $1.78 per quarter.

Compare our rates with the Federal Employees Group Life Insurance (FEDLI) program.  For members under age 50, this program is much more economical.

The newly added Living Benefits Option allows access to as much as 50 percent of the face amount of your life insurance benefit if you are medically determined to be terminally ill.  This benefit has been added at no additional cost.



FlexCare Hospital Cash Plan

Hospital care is expensive - and it is usually not until after you're out of the hospital that you realize just how much of the cost must come out of your own pocket.

Your Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) insurance may pay up to 80 percent of these costs, leaving the rest to you.  If you or a family member has ever been hospitalized, you know that the out-of-pocket expense can be astronomical, possible interfering with your financial planning.

In order to offset those extra costs - and to give you peace of mind - NTEU offers additional protection through the FlexCare Hospital Cash Plan.

The FlexCare Hospital Cash Plan offers:  $40, $60, $80, or $100 per day cash payments to you.  Moreover, this plan pays in addition to any other insurance coverage you may have.

Dependent children may be covered until age 25.

Eligibility:  Members must be under age 65 at the time of the enrollment.

Premiums: May be paid annually or semi-annually.  Premiums are based on your age and increase at 10-year intervals.



Long-Term Care

The NTEU Long-Term Care (LTC) plan offers skilled, intermediate and custodial care in a nursing facility.  The plan also covers non-confinement services such as adult day-care, home health care, and respite care.  Members, spouses, parents and parents-in-law under age 80 (when coverage is approved and effective) are eligible to apply.  Premiums are payable through payroll deduction for members and spouses.  Quarterly billing is also available.

Highlights of the plan include:

  • Benefits available for costs incurred up to $100 a day for confined care and up to $50 a day for non-confined care
  • Automatic Inflation Protection Option and a Benefit Increase Provision, under which confined care coverage can increase to $300 a day, and non-confined care to $150 a day, over 20 years
  • Maximum benefits of 1,825 units of service - up to five years of confined care service, 10 years of non-confined care service, or a combination
  • Premiums based on age at enrollment, with no increase as age increases
  • Toll-free hot line to answer questions (800)877-1052

Note:  Long-term care premiums are tax deductible like health insurance premiums.  Specifically, premiums and expenses paid in excess of 7.5 percent of taxable income are tax deductible.  Also, long term health care benefits received up to $63,875 annually are tax exempt.



Professional Liability Insurance

NTEU members now have the opportunity to purchase professional liability insurance.  This insurance offers the following benefits:

  • Damages

The policy will pay all sums up to $1 million which you are obligated to pay as damage in suits based on acts, errors, or omissions committed in the performance of official duties.

Litigation Defense

The insurance company will provide counsel, without limitation, to defend any suit for damage brought against you.  This counsel is available if either the Department of Justice delays or declines representation.

Administrative Expense Coverage

The insurance company will provide counsel and pay cost of defense and monetary penalties arising out of disciplinary proceedings (including investigations), criminal proceedings (including investigations) and judicial sanction up to $100,000 annually.

Prepaid Legal Insurance

Prepaid Legal Plans are now available to NTEU members. These plans are administered by Advisory Communications Services, Inc., and are part of the LAWPHONE® legal services plan. LAWPHONE® is a powerful system that uses 16,000 lawyers in 6,500 law firms throughout the U.S. and Canada, sophisticated telephone and computer links, as well as financial counselors, family mediators and legal experts in immigration, tax and bankruptcy laws.

Benefits include:

· LAWPHONE® legal helpline, giving you direct access to a legal advisor, just by picking up the phone. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in case of legal emergency.

· Financial Counseling and Tax Helpline, in cooperation with Ernst & Young LLP.

· No deductibles, no waiting periods and no claim forms when you use a network law firm.

· If you have a legal issue that is not covered, the plans will still provide the benefit of a referral network lawyer who will charge you a 25% reduced fee for any legal work undertaken.
